By Anne Gelhaus | Bay Area News Group Sunnyvale school is distinguished Fourteen elementary schools in the Cupertino Union School District, including West Valley Elementary in Sunnyvale, were selected for the 2023 California Distinguished Schools Program earlier this month. The California Distinguished Schools program recognizes schools for excellence in one of two categories: closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance. The California Department of Education uses multiple measures to identify eligible schools, including assessment results, chronic absenteeism, suspension rates and socioeconomic data.
